Multi-instrumentalist and bluegrass music teacher Garry Greenland is the second recipient of the annual David Tinkoff Award for special contributions to the life of bluegrass in the Ottawa area.
Garry began his bluegrass music career at the age of 13 performing at old folks' homes, churches and house parties. At 14, he was playing in bars with a special permit that required him to leave the premises between sets. Still in his mid-teens, he met Frank Wakefield at a folk festival jam, and Frank invited Garry on the road with his band. Throughout his teens, Garry was a sought-after sideman who played for notable music acts including Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Rosalie Sorrels and Ray Benedict.
Garry is not just a tremendous musician, he's also an excellent and admired teacher of banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass. Almost everyone I know in the Ottawa Valley region who plays bluegrass music was taught by Garry at some point, myself included. As a teacher, Garry stresses the fundamentals of bluegrass music. Strong rhythm and accurate timing are essential; he also emphasizes the importance of playing the story – not just playing the notes.
